Discover the top 3 advantages of LiFePO4 batteries and their impact on the EV industry.
LiFePO4 batteries have become a cornerstone of innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Known for their remarkable blend of performance, safety, and durability, these batteries are setting new benchmarks for energy storage solutions.
Here are three key advantages that make LiFePO4 batteries stand out in the EV market.
1. High Energy Density
The energy density of mass-produced prismatic aluminum-shell lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries was around 160 Wh/kg in 2018. By 2019, leading battery manufacturers achieved levels of 175–180 wh/kg. Some exceptional manufacturers, using stacking technology and increasing capacity, pushed the density up to 185 wh/kg.
2. Good Safety Performance
The cathode material of LiFePO4 batteries has stable electrochemical properties, ensuring a steady charge-discharge platform. This means that during the charge and discharge process, the battery’s structure does not change, preventing combustion or explosion. Even under extreme conditions like short circuits, overcharging, compression, or puncturing, the battery remains highly safe.
3. Long Service Life
Lithium-iron phosphate batteries typically have a 1C cycle life of around 3500 cycles and can even exceed 10,000 cycles. In the energy storage market, the requirement is generally between 8,000 and 10,000 cycles, ensuring a lifeszpan of 10-20 years, which is much higher than the cycle life of ternary lithium batteries, which is around 2000 cycles. In comparison, long-life lead-acid batteries have a cycle life of about 500 cycles.
Application in the new energy automobile industry
Thanks to their excellent safety and cost effectiveness, LiFePO4 batteries are widely used in passenger cars, buses, logistics vehicles, and low-speed electric vehicles. In the current new energy passenger vehicle market, these batteries hold an irreplaceable advantage, particularly in buses and logistics vehicles.
For the special vehicle, the application of LiFePO4 batteries steadily increased, taking up about 30%, 32%, and 40% in the 5th, 6th, and 7th batches of the "Recommended Models for New Energy Vehicle Promotion and Application Catalogue.".
Between 2007 and 2013, many automakers launched range-extended pure electric vehicle projects, paving the way for broader adoption of this technology.
Academician Yang Yusheng of the Chinese Academy of Engineering advocates using LiFePO4 batteries in range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). He argues this not only enhances vehicle safety but also accelerates the marketization of REEVs by alleviating concerns associated with pure electric vehicles, such as range, safety, cost, charging, and long-term battery issues.
With their high energy density, excellent safety, and long cycle life, LiFePO4 batteries are redefining EV performance. As technology advances, they’re poised to play an even bigger role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
